Providing free mobile healthcare to migrant and seasonal farmworkers
The Migrant Farmworker Health Initiative - MFHI - is an Indiana based non profit organization seeking 501c3 status. We provide free primary healthcare to some of the thousands of migrant and seasonal farmworkers who come to Indiana each season in search of agricultural work.
Why us?
83% of migrant farmworkers live below the Federal Poverty Line
65% of migrant farmworkers require care in a language other than English
How we work
Recruit
MFHI is staffed completely by volunteers. We recruit physicians and other clinical experts from local hospitals. Next, we recruit medical interpreters from local college programs and from the greater Indiana community.
Partner
We partner with local farm owners and the migrants they employ to determine their interest in the program, informing them of our mission to provide mobile health care at no cost to the patient.
Train
All of our volunteers are trained to provide culturally appropriate services, including key information about patient rights as well as cultural sensitivity. In doing so, we reduce barriers to care and bring care to underserved communities.
Provide
Once our volunteers are trained and a site has been selected, we take our operations where care is needed most - directly to the farm.
